Famvir is an antiviral drug that works by slowing down the spread of herpes virus so that your immune system has more time to fight off the infection. It does not cure herpes, but certainly helps in treating the symptoms of the same. Other than treating genital herpes, Famvir is used to treat health problems caused by herpes virus such as shingles, chicken pox and cold sores.
Important information about Famvir
You need to take this drug for the entire length of time as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms start improving before it is completely treated. You should start taking this drug as soon you see the first symptoms of genital herpes, such as blisters, tingling, burning.
These infections are contagious and other people can be infected by it even if you are taking proper treatment with Famvir. Do not touch the infected areas to come in contact with other people. Do not touch the infected area and then touch your eyes. This might spread the infection to your eyes. Stay clean and wash your hands frequently to avoid passing this infection to others.
Before taking Famvir
Avoid taking this medication if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, especially penciclovir. Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have:
- Kidney problems
- Galactose intolerance
- Severe lactase deficiency
- Glucose-galactose malabsorption
Only your doctor can decide if it is safe for you to take this medication. Sometimes, you might need special tests to check if your body will be able to cope with the use of this medication. This FDA approved drug falls under category B and it is not expected to harm the unborn baby but consult a doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Also, it is not known if this drug passes in to breast milk, so you should avoid taking it if you are breastfeeding.
How should I take Famvir?
Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. You should start treatment with Famvir as soon as you notice the first symptoms such as blisters, tingling and burning. You need to take Famvir tablets with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of water when you are taking this drug, so that your kidneys work properly. You can take this drug with or without having food but it is advisable that you eat something light. This will help you decrease the chances of stomach upset.
Ensure that you complete the whole course and take this drug for as long as the doctor has prescribed it. You should complete the whole course even if your symptoms start getting better before completion of the same. Take this medication as prescribed only and store it at a dry place. You should wear loose clothing so that lesions of this health condition are prevented. Store this medication at room temperature and keep it away from heat and moisture.
