Let’s Choose Together a Cot for Your Baby

You should be careful while choosing a baby cot for your little one. Although all new baby cots available in the market should meet the current infant bedding safety standards it would be very provident if you devote your attention to this and check it by yourself.

If you have already decided to buy a definite baby cot it is important to make sure that every component of your cot is sturdy and firmly attached. Even if you are buying a new one and you believe that every detail works and the cot is equipped with the latest safety features it is preferable to check it personally.

Examine every detail of it: the bars, the mattress base, and the drop sides, as well as any other panels or pieces for stability. Avoid getting a baby cot with protruding knobs and other hardware that may catch your infant’s clothing. Some decorative features as knobs and cut-outs can look fancy and elegant but do not use any cot which features them because they might be a danger to your baby safety.

Sometimes minor defects can be discovered only when a bargain has been concluded. Don’t be reckless, shy or lazy, stand your ground and change the cot. It is advisable to review such an admissible situation beforehand.

A hand-me-down baby cot, is it safe?
It is not advisable to get a hand-me-down baby cot if you don’t know its history. Getting a second-hand cot can be practical in case if it is inspected thoroughly and every detail and fasteners are all right, especially make sure all the bars are secured and none are missing. Cot bars on the headboard, footboard or sides of the baby crib should not be over 2-1/8 apart. If the cot has been repainted make sure the paint used on the cot is lead-free otherwise you won’t be able to prevent future neurological complications.

What must be definitely new?
Speaking about baby mattresses it is important to mention that they should be definitely new. Because only new baby mattress can be firm enough, that is very good for a newborn because a new baby’s muscles are not fully developed yet and it is hard for the child to lift his or her head up after she or he has sunk into a soft and fluffy surface. In addition when your child is in bed on a firm cot mattress he or she can move and roll about more freely and easily, making him or her more comfy.

The baby mattress has to fit the cot snugly and close in order not to allow the wiggling baby get trapped between, and moreover there should be at least a height of 26″ that you can measure from the top of the cot mattress to the top of the cot rail in a raised position.
