Finding the Right Alternative Energy Source
There are benefits and down sides to the use of alternative energy sources. Although most people want to see only the good in these alternative energy sources, there are some considerations that many people overlook which have an impact on the environment as well as the energy that is produced. There are many different types of alternative energy sources that can be utilized today since there are new technologies that are being developed that make them more cost efficient to use. There is solar power, wind power, geothermal power, hydroelectric power, bio fuels, and many more.
Pros and Cons
The good part of using wind or solar alternative energy sources is that they are renewable and do not have an impact on the environment through their use. The down side is that the energy that is produces is not consistent from one day to the next so that the power cannot be relied upon fully to produce what is needed for a community or a home. In addition, when being used for commercial use, the turbines or panels that are needed are huge, and are an eyesore, even though they do not have a negative environmental impact as they are usually placed where there is nothing else around anyway.
Geothermal power is a great alternative energy source as well because it is also renewable and once the plant is in place, very little has to be done to keep production going. The plants are not as large as what is needed for the wind farms and solar panels so they are not the eyesores that the other alternative energy sources tend to be. However, the geothermal alternative energy sources can cause a problem to the environment if they are not properly set up, as improper drilling can release pockets of gas into the air which are harmful.
Hydroelectric alternative energy sources are another good option as the water is always flowing from one place to the next. Tidal power can also be used as the movement of the tides creates the energy in the turbines and generators. This is a fairly consistent source of alternative energy since the water can be accumulated behind dams so that it can be let out when more power is needed. The biggest down side of using the hydroelectric alternative energy source is that the dams are very expensive to build in order to be effective in producing enough energy for a community.
