The Duchess
The Duchess was released in 2008 and is based on Amanda Foreman’s best selling biography of the scandalous aristocrat of 18th century Georgiana Cavendish who was the Duchess of Devonshire. The movie is basically a drama which visualizes the life of the Duchess filled with agony and the distress that was caused by the unfaithfulness of her husband who was the Duke of Devonshire. Lead roles were performed by Keira Knightly as the Duchess of Devonshire and her husband by Ralph Fiennes. The movie was directed by Saul Dibb.
The movie very impressively portrays the life of the Duchess. Duchess was a role model in her approach. She was a beautiful young girl with a rather impressive taste for fashion and glamour. She was considered as the girl of his people. All the people of her kingdom adored her because she also stood for there means. Her fashion instinct made her the symbol of parties where everyone desired to be with her or at least to gain her attention. She was the trend setter and everything she did becomes a fashion the next day. She was quite active in her approach towards politics. When she addressed, she eloquently sabotaged everyone with her critical thoughts about the politics. She also took part in the welfare of her people and everyone loved her. She was very good in gambling as well and drinking on the other hand. She was also infamous about her love affairs as well.
She was married to the Duke of Devonshire before her 18th birthday. Her husband Duke of Devonshire, role played by Ralph Fiennes, was filled with unfaithfulness. He was in love with her wife’s best friend, a role played by Hayley Atwell as the Lady Bess. The betrayal of her friend was enough to disregard Duchess’ feelings for her husband. Her role as a wife was just limited to providing a male heir to her husband, otherwise her husband has no interest in her. She gave birth to two daughters and a son after all with the addition to many miscarriages.
The love is the basic theme of this movie. Duchess was always in search for the love which she would have got from her husband. But she was living in a house with her husband loving her best friend was enough to make her realize that she had no one in this world and she is all alone. Another character, however, helped the Duchess to come out of this situation. This was her love Charles Grey role played by Dominic Cooper. This was all the Duchess had in her life. Her affair with Charles Grey was growing by everyday and her husband became very annoyed with this situation causing a scandal to make news. Charles was an ambitious politician who had respect for the Duchess and felt it as his responsibility to soothe her in such circumstances for distress.
