Boom in bottled water consumption in Canada

Over the past decade the Canadian bottled water industry has grown at a rapid pace. This is due to the fact that Canadians drink bottled water on a regular basis and the country is home to many top bottled water companies.

According to the Polaris Institute, a Canadian NGO, up to 17.5% of Canada’s population consumes bottled water not far behind the United States where 20% of the population uses bottled sources. Not only in Canada and the U.S., the sales for every bottled water company worldwide have increased manifold during this decade.

For bottled water companies in Canada this segment is no more a niche market but a mainstream industry since it is now a staple product for most Canadians. This increased demand has now created a long list of bottled water companies in the country. Today, there are various bottled water companies in Canada that have flooded the market with over 75 brands of bottled water products. There are also few bottled water companies Ontario catering to this boom in consumption of packaged water.

In Canada a water bottling company is regulated by the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations. The act maintains standards, provides labeling requirements and determines various safety criterions for bottled water and food products in Canada. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) inspects and monitors packaged drinking water manufactured in or imported to Canada.

Bottled water products are categorized on the basis of their balance, hardness, mineral strength, orientation, pristine quality and vintage. Bottled water are of various types, such as still, effervescent, light sparkling, medium sparkling and high sparkling.
