My observation of my colleagues
The writing of this essay gives me the opportunity to introduce my college and more importantly my college colleagues to the reader. I will begin by informing about my college, which is a small one that encourages working adults to enroll and avail further academic education. The subject at which I am naturally good at is Sociology, and I have opted to specialize in this field, however, I must add here that although we are imparted education in Sociology in our class, a subject where we are required to learn about people, but among the most interesting parts of our education is the observance we make of each of our colleagues in class. It may sound surprising but in my class there are only two male students and that includes me while all other students are ladies of all ages.
I would like to begin with the mention of us male students by stating that the two of us were during the initial periods after our enrollment in the class had to remain rather quiet and would only volunteer to speak out when the subjects being discussed were more closely related to us. While my male colleague is a highly intelligent person who has had the opportunity to study in different places schools in various parts of the country and also has the experience of having dealt with differently cultured people, he therefore also speaks many different languages. However, when we are in our class he is extremely quiet and although he knows most of the answers, our teacher has to make great efforts in getting him to speak out and answer her questions. The purpose of my paper on this subject is to analyze the reasons for such behavior which at times appears to be out of character. And these types of odd behaviors are not just restricted to him, but are also evident in many of my female fellow students in class.
Although we are studying to be experts in social behavior so that we can understand and reason out why and how human beings act and behave in particular ways, perhaps studying ourselves and making sense of our own peculiar ways would be a valuable lesson to help and guide us when we in the future are required to evaluate and assess the social related factors of different people in different situations.
Therefore, when it comes to analyzing my male colleague perhaps I should first try to understand the reasons as to what made him opt to enroll in a small school like the one we are attending. Could it be because in a smaller school with lesser students in the class perhaps he was trying to get more personalized attention and recognition unlike the previous large educational institutions where he previously studied where he might have been just one amongst a crowd of many other students?
