The tag heuer autavia reborn

its seventieth birthday, the tag heuer autavia was reborn. among the highlights of the baselworld watch and jewelry show this year autavia embodied what tag heuer represents: modernity that also pays homage to the firm’s storied, sports-infused history.
autavia itself began as a dashboard clock in 1933. Quickly in demand by top racers worldwide, its cutting edge 30-minute and 12-hour timers fueled its success. in 1963, Jack heuer remade the autavia into a wristwatch that, in 1969, he equipped with the famed Chronomat movement, a world-first automatic chronograph with its crown at 9 o’clock, which is more comfortable for racers who utilize the pushers more frequently than the crown.
Jack heuer has rejoined tag heuer as the honorary Chairman of the firm, and his vision of the autavia retains its essential wide tonneau case with round dial and 9 o’clock crown. however, inside is a new engine: the tag heuer Calibre 11, the brand’s heir to the original Chronomat. the movement is thinner, as is the case dimension, but it retains the 40-hour power reserve. for collectors the firm has created a rose gold version in a heuer’s gold Mine TAG Heuer’s history is a gold mine of pioneering technical and aesthetic milestones. In addition to the Autavia, the firm this year has created several new classics that owe design inspiration to specific models of the past.
Again, much of this is credited to Jack Heuer, grandson of Edouard Heuer, who founded the firm in 1860. Jack Heuer, who developed the Chronomat in 1969, works with TAG Heuer’s research and development team to develop new models, offering decades of watchmaking experience that has so profoundly influenced the timing of sports events.
“I always try to reiterate the core brand values,” says Heuer. “I believe it is crucial to retain the unique spirit that has character ized our history from the time of founding. This spirit must permeate TAG Heuer in the twenty-first century. It is the guiding principle that has traveled through five gen erations and constitutes a living legacy; a legacy of innovations.”
Heuer’s renewed influence is seen most broadly in the 2003 introductions in the now expanded Classics collection, also called the Legendary Sports Watches. These include names well known in professional timing circles that, especially this year, are now on the minds of watch buyers worldwide: Autavia, Monaco, Carrera, Monza and Targa Florio.
