How to Use Stress Management Techniques
Stress is one of the top most dangerous health problems in a modern society. It can be triggered by many things… from an argument with a friend, to having a quarrel with your spouse, to disputing with clients, and even moving to a new location with new environment can trigger stress.
In the workplace, project deadlines, pressure from our bosses, and relationships with the people we work with can cause stress, too. Even something as ordinary as dealing with heavy traffic on our way to work or waiting in a long line at the check out counter in the supermarket can cause stress.
It seems like no one can really escape from stress these days. It will creep up to you soon or later. Therefore, it is important to learn how to deal with stress when it arises. Stress management is a very important skill if you want to live a happy life these days.
In this article, you are going to learn some techniques to alleviate stress. You can’t eliminate stress completely but you can manage and control its intensity so that it doesn’t get harmful.
Stress can come from many sources and it is almost impossible to identify all of them. But, you should take note whenever stress creeps up to you. Try to understand the source of the stress so that you can learn how to deal with it and prevent it to happen again in the future.
Next, list down all the things that are troubling you at the moment. List ALL of them regardless of how important or unimportant they may be. Once done, group them into two. The first group (group 1) should comprise all the things that you can do something about, and the second (group 2) should comprise those that you cannot change or have no control over.
Review the list thoroughly and then throw away those things that are listed in group 2 because they are not worth worrying about. You simply can’t change the things that you have no control over. So, please don’t waste your time and energy trying to manage those things that you have no control of.
For example, if you get stuck in a traffic jam, instead of getting angry and get all stressed out… why not turn on a music and enjoy it. There is nothing you can do about it, you have no control over a traffic jam. So it is not worth it to get all stressed out because of that. If you have an appointment and you are stuck in traffic, then pick up your cell phone and call them up and tell them that you are going to be late. Simple as that!
Focus your energy on dealing with things that you can change. Look at your group 1 list again and go through them one by one. Write down how you can deal with each. Things that you can change are things that you have control over. So, make the changes and get better.
For example, if a messy work desk gives you stress, then tidy it up. Throw away all those papers that you don’t need and file away the documents in the folders, label each folder so that it is easy for you to find what you want next time. Just do it and don’t get stressed out from something that you can change.
The stress management techniques I have just shared with you are very effective and very easy to implement. So, make sure you put them into good use.
