Although many offshore jobs exist it seems to be rather difficult for job seekers to find themselves in employment on oil rigs. Even when you apply for work you might find that it’s quite seldom that you even get an email back. If the truth be known recruiters and especially companies require a lot from an individual wanting to find their career offshore. It rarely happens where someone is taken on without any type of relevant experience although it’s not impossible. Due to the tightening of health and safety controls, oil rig bosses are finding it increasingly difficult to find people. Many will look to hardworking onshore workers to fill the employment gap.
If you wish to have an offshore job it is very advisable to start working onshore and make sure that you keep a good clean safety record. You will also need to have at least or all these certificates – health and safety certificates, rescue and lifesaving certificates. In order for a company to get tenders to extract oil, they have to agree that all personal have some type of health and safety certificate and Oil rig bosses don’t want to have fingers pointed at them when something does go wrong. You will of course have to hold your relevant trade certificate for what you are employed to do. There are roles that won’t require experience or a trade certificate. These roles start you off at the bottom. They are known as roughnecks or roustabouts and they have to do all the hard labour intensive work. If a worker shows their dedication they can quickly and easily find themselves being promoted into higher positions. In fact working offshore is the quickest way to get up a career ladder.

Most jobs follow a day on for a day off procedure but those shifts start at anything from one month on to month off. Normally this will be a six month period off earning very good money to then take the rest of the year off.
